I do it from love…
Last year I posted a small portion of why I don’t just pay someone to run my garden. And the more Spirit puts in my path… the more the idea actually became tempting. If you have a garden, you understand the WORK it entails. It’s not always cute lil videos, and pictures for social media. It’s getting up before the sun, pulling weeds, planning, dirty, time consuming, and meticulous work.
But…this is in my blood. My Mambo (mixture of something great) has allowed me to be here. On my fathers side, some of my more recent ancestors were slaves on plantations here in Virginia. Once they were “free”, became farmers of their own lands. My Native roots also come from my father’s side. So my pull, and appreciation for the earth, its beauty, power, and wisdom run deep. When I can’t get something to grow right, or need some help… my first place to fine the wisdom I seek is not Google… it’s in the ancestor room. “Ancestors show me what I need to do to make this right. How did you make this work on this land? Guide my minds, hands, and heart so I can do this. And if it is not God’s will, show me what I can do, and use in it’s place”.
Momma, and Grands from both sides taught me to use the spirit of the plants in medicine. Momma, taught me how to use their magick in our work. When you have a deep bond with the plant spirits… they are more powerful, and aide to push your work in ways you could never imagine. So why would I NOT want to see, feel, and be a part of the full cycle an circle? I get to feel and prepare the earth, plant the seeds, witness the beauty of growth, hold space, care for and give back to Mama Earth, and the spirits of the plants. When the time is divine, I am able to feed my own family, give freely to others in my community, and gather co-creators for my medicine, and workings. I don’t grow for profit… I grow for purpose. I have been offered SEVERAL times to bag and wholesale my harvests. Truth is… I never really completely “harvest”.
I only take what I need, and give to my people what I don’t. And when the season is over… I collect seeds to be able to do it all again the next year. And for some things… I leave them right where they are and let nature, and the Earth do what they know to do. Shit I even plant things I know the deer like on the edges of the farm to keep them happy and out of the farm. And it’s been working pretty good so far hahah :-)
I send, trade, and share seeds with fellow gardeners, and practitioners because we are all working towards a common goal. To feed and heal our people. So if there’s every anything you want to try and grow yourself… holla atcha girl! This year I will also be allowing parents to bring their children to learn about growing, and caring for their own food. I think I’m excited for that the most lol! Mambo luv the kids ❤ And they are our future. We need to teach them well. Learn to sustain yourself and family. That way you’ll never have to depend on anyone else to feed you.
